Filmy tryst with the Moustache
Actors Kamal Haasan, Dhanush, and Suriya have been spotted sporting moustaches onscreen

Chennai
There’s something about the moustache. Ever since 1950s and 60s, the villains have regularly sported them, with or without much success. However, when heroes like Sivaji Ganesan or MGR sported them in films like Kattabomman or Karnan, their looks were a huge hit with the audience. The trend of heroes sporting moustaches is making a comeback in Kollywood.
The success of Maari, where Dhanush sported a well-trimmed paintbrush moustache is a great example. Every time, his character twirls his moustache in the film and says ‘Senjuruven’, there is a thunderous applause from the movie-lovers.
Now Vijay Sethupathi’s upcoming flick, Sethupathi where he will play the role of a cop, shows him sporting the mousche in its first looks. He says, “We decided to play around with the moustache for the role of cop in the movie as we thought the looks would suit the character well.’’ The heroes are taking this trend rather seriously. Jil Jung Juck’s first look posters, where Siddharth is seen with a handlebar moustache and a goatie in his cowboy look, was well received by the young audiences. Kamal Haasan can be now seen in his famous Thevar Magan moustache, fresh from success of Thoongaavanam.
Rajesh M Selva, director of the film says, “After the completion of Vishwaroopam in 2013, Kamal sir grew a thick beard and a moustache. That created a deep impression in my mind. In fact the script required this look as well.”
To this Joy Crizildaa, a celeb stylist adds, “Usually the look of a character is decided based on the script. But yes, moustaches have been in vogue for a while now. Mature characters in Tamil films could be the primary reason.”
